New Air Traffic Control Towers Advance at Honiara and Munda Airports.
Construction works on the new Air Traffic Control (ATC) Towers at Munda and Honiara International Airport are progressing well, with significant progress recorded on the structural components of both facilities. The works are being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with financial support from the World Bank. Construction is being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), with Egis Asia providing supervision consultancy services.
At Munda Airport, all major structural concrete works, including the roof slab of the Visual Control Room (VCR), have been completed and the facility is now ready for finishing works. Plastering works at the ground and first-floor levels are also progressing.
At Honiara International Airport, the fourth-floor slab, beams, columns and staircases have been successfully concrete-cast. Preparation and scaffolding works for the fifth and final level, including the inclined columns, beams and roof slab, are currently progressing. Structural concrete works are targeted for completion on or before 25 August 2026. Lintel beam works for doors and windows at the ground-floor level are also progressing.
MCA Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea said, “The progress achieved at both Munda and Honiara is an important milestone for the Solomon Islands aviation sector. These facilities will strengthen air traffic management and improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of aviation operations. The Ministry appreciates the support of the World Bank and the work being undertaken by CCECC to deliver these important infrastructure projects to the required quality and safety standards.”
The ATC Tower works form part of SIRAP2’s broader investment in strengthening aviation infrastructure, improving operational safety and enhancing air traffic management capacity at Solomon Islands’ key airports. The works also complement other aviation infrastructure improvements being undertaken under SIRAP2 to ensure airport facilities are safer, more resilient and better equipped to meet future operational needs.
The Government, through MCA and with support from the World Bank, remains committed to working closely with contractors, consultants and other stakeholders to ensure the projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with the required technical, quality and international aviation safety standards.
