Contractors Awarded Major Road Upgrade Contracts in Malaita Province
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) with funding support from the World Bank, is pleased to announce the award of two major road upgrade contracts in Malaita Province.
Following a competitive procurement process, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has been awarded the contract for the North Road section, while Trades Transformation Company Limited (TTCL) has been awarded the contract for the East Road section.
Under the contract, CCECC will bituminous seal 12 km of the North Road from Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction to Kwaisuliniu Road Junction, improving road access for communities and road users along this important transport corridor. TTCL will carry out routine maintenance and regravelling of 21 km of the East Road from Baratolo to Atori), a key route that connects communities and supports the movement of people, agricultural products, and essential goods and services.
The road works form part of the Government of Solomon Islands’ ongoing commitment to strengthening the country's transport infrastructure and improving connectivity across the provinces. Once completed, the upgraded roads will provide safer, more reliable, and climate-resilient transport links, reducing travel times and improving access to markets, health services, schools, and other essential services.
Acting Permanent Secretary of MID, Mr. Mike Qaqara, commended the progress, stating:
"The award of these contracts marks an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure and connectivity in Malaita Province. These investments will have a meaningful impact on communities by improving access to essential services, supporting economic opportunities, and enhancing the safety and reliability of transport networks."
MID remains committed to working closely with SIRAP2, the World Bank, contractors, provincial authorities, landowners, and communities to ensure the successful delivery of these important road upgrades. Community engagement will be a key priority throughout implementation, and stakeholders along the project corridors are encouraged to participate in upcoming consultations.
These two contracts are a significant investment in Malaita Province and are expected to contribute to economic growth and social development by enhancing mobility, creating employment opportunities during the construction phase and supporting broader development objectives.
As preparations for construction activities commence, SIRAP2 and MID will undertake a series of community consultations and awareness programs along both project corridors. These consultations will formally introduce the contractors to the communities, provide information on the scope of works, construction schedules, and expected project impacts, and ensure that stakeholders have the opportunity to engage with the project team.
MID, SIRAP2, and the World Bank acknowledge the cooperation and support of the Malaita Provincial Government, local leaders, landowners, and communities throughout the project preparation process and look forward to continued collaboration during implementation.
