Press Release 16th December 2025 Superstructure Works Commence on Aviation Complex Building. Construction of the new Aviation Complex Building near Honiara International Airport has reached a milestone, with superstructure works now underway. The Design and Build contract, implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) and supported by the World Bank under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), is progressing steadily and on track to deliver critical infrastructure improvements for the nation’s aviation sector. The Contractor has commenced superstructure works following the completion of the building’s substructure. Under-slab backfilling activities were completed on November 12, 2025, with field density test confirming full compliance with the required design bearing capacity. The ground floor slab and edge beams were constructed from November 10 to 21, 2025 in sequenced sections to accommodate designated construction joints, encompassing mesh installation, formwork, and concrete pouring according to approved design specifications. On November 6, 2025, a World Bank team conducted a technical and occupational health and safety monitoring and identified some gaps in safety practices that are currently being addressed by the Contractor. In addition, a material factory inspection was jointly undertaken by the Engineer, Contractor, and Supplier following confirmation of material approvals. Moving ahead, the Contractor will continue to advance superstructure works, focusing on completing the column and masonry walls in the coming months. Progress is expected to be accelerated by strengthened coordination, planning, and site supervision to ensure timely and effective works delivery. The Permanent Secretary for the MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, welcomed the progress to date and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the new complex building. “The commencement of superstructure works marks an important milestone for the Aviation Complex Building, which is a critical investment in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of aviation operations at Honiara International Airport. Despite some challenges, we are encouraged by the progress made and the corrective actions being implemented on site,” Danitofea said. Beyond the Honiara Aviation Complex, SIRAP2 is advancing a broad suite of critical infrastructure projects across the country. These include: the construction of Noro roads, four new bridges in Malaita, upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields, installation of air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, rehabilitation of 21 kilometres of the East Road between Baratolo and Atori, and sealing of 12 kilometres of the North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.
